Totley Scouts participate in Westbourne Cup 2024
On Friday the 20th September 2024, two teams from 215th 1st Totley Scouts group competed in the Westbourne Cup along with 12 other teams from other Scouts groups from the district. The Westbourne Cup consists of a roughly 6 hour hike through the night to reach 8 bases. It is one of the most challenging events Scouts can take part in, since you have to work as a team to use map and compass skills to cover a large area and get to each base in the dark. At each base you then have to carry out a different activity. Each team is then given a score, based on teamwork, speed and accuracy.
The tents were already set up at Whiteley Woods, once we had arrived (thanks to Tristan and Dave), so we only had to set up our beds for the night.
It was quite a foggy night but fortunately we were well equipped with bright torches and spare batteries. We set off into the night heading for the first base, where we successfully completed the first activity. We continued around all bases, completing all activities at each one. Our team particularly enjoyed the 5th base with Dave, Jon and Adam where we had to guess what was in the box, but we did NOT enjoy putting our hands in the baked beans!
Finally we arrived back at camp at around 2:30, tired but proud of our achievements, where we all slept soundly in our tents till around 8:30.
In the morning, after a breakfast of pancakes, we found out our places in the Cup. Our team placed 6th, and the other team placed 2nd all out of 14 teams which we were all very happy with.
It was really great fun - but we all appreciated our beds the following night! Thanks to all the leaders for organising and participating too.
Many thanks to Bron, one of our fantastic Scouts for writing about her experience at the Cup!
