Totley Scouts compete for the Hallam Trophy!

Article written by Joseph one of the Scouts who participated:

At the weekend (Saturday 16th March) scouts from all over Hallam District gathered at Hesley Woods to compete in the largest ever Hallam Trophy event, with over 100 scouts taking part. In total, there were 19 teams; two of them were from our scout group (Totley 215th). I was in a group with Rory, Harry, Zoe and Alex. The other team included Sam, Georgia, Charlie, Isabel, Tom and Ethan.

The event consisted of all the teams rotating around 12 bases, all with different tasks and challenges. This meant there were sometimes two teams on one base, so we got to meet some of the other competitors as well. We were awarded points at each base, based on how well we completed the task and worked as a team. We also had a joker card, which doubled the points scored whichever base we used it on, but we had to decide whether to use it before completing the task.

Some of the easier activities included semaphore, rat-in-the-drainpipe and morse code with flags. One particularly challenging activity was moving a ball across a field with nothing but a few canes and some rope. My personal favourite was making friction lock bridges (bridges that don’t use any rope, glue, etc to support them) and we scored quite highly on it as well. At the end of the day, Ecclesall won the trophy with Totley teams coming 9th and 12th.

Finally, a big thanks to Adam, everyone who organised it and the other leaders who helped out by running bases for giving us all the opportunity to take part in such a fantastic event. Overall, a very enjoyable day and something I would definitely do again next year and recommend to others.

Adam, Scout leader added:

Well done to all the Scouts for competing in the Hallam Trophy! Really impressed with them all.

Both teams placed a very respectable mid-table amongst some tough competition. Our teams were quite young so it really bodes well for future competitions, once they've got more experience under their belts and spent more time working together.
