Totley Independent January 2023 article updating on Hut Refurbishments
It’s been out with the old and in with the new at Totley Scout Hut over the past year!
The newly installed exterior walls have now been painted several times by a number of volunteers from our Scout group and their parents. This work has really improved the structure of the building, and has enabled us to go onto making improvements inside the building, too.
The old toilets have been ripped out, much to the delight of the children and leaders, and they have been replaced by 3 separate bathrooms, including one which is accessible for people with disabilities.
The Explorer Room and kitchen have been merged into one, much more usable, large space, with the old storage units reused and improved, so that there is room to store all the kit that our groups use at meetings. The interior walls and parts of the floor in the Explorer area have been replaced, with additional insulation being fitted. The interior walls of the main meeting hall are now being replaced, again with insulation inserted to make for a much cosier and more energy efficient building.
We've definitely not finished yet, though. We still need to install a new boiler and kitchen units, as well as replacing the remaining interior walls and the roof, so plenty more funding is still needed. We will be applying to various grants to help us pay for this, as well as continuing our fundraising efforts in the community. The Christmas craft fair and raffle were really well supported by our local community and helped towards our fundraising efforts. We’re grateful to everyone who got involved with them, and we’d like to thank the local businesses who donated prizes to our raffle – including Liberty Foods Farm Shop, Pontus Fish & Chips, Martin Scriven Greengrocers, 195 Hairlines, Cricket Inn, The Crown Inn Totley, Cross Scythes & Pedal Bike Repairs, as well as SUFC.

Thanks to Dave Slingsby Construction and Tom Kelson Electrical for all their hard work on our hut so far!
